Best practice – IT outsourcing

Jun 16, 2020

Since 2008 where we started with nearshore software outsourcing, we have gathered some basic tips & tricks – best practices. Allow us to share what we have learned. This is not a full list but things worth considering, before the corporation start.

Vendor, location & culture.
Choose a vendor and a culture that is not too far from your own, it is essential. Your vendor/partner in outsourcing needs to be compatible with your company’s culture. The right partner will be a part of your organization and need to compatible as well as the employees should. Get to know you vendor by visiting them and make sure they have similar values as your company.

Dedicated team.
Outsourcing has changed over the years, it has become much better than its reputation from the last centuries. Today, you do not outsource a project. You find a vendor who becomes your partner and together with them establish your own dedicated development team. At CrossWorkers, that is exactly what we do. We do not have people sitting on the bench, we recruit specific for you. We do that with a skills matrix and a business description/-plan made together with you. In that way, we make sure that your ambition at the developer are aligned. You have to approve all developers before they start working for you

Timezone.
There are many possibilities out there. You can choose a provider in e.g. Vietnam, who are 5 time zones away from CET or you can choose Egypt who is in the same time zone as central Europe. If you are working agile, it would be an easy choice.

Communication & language.
Communication is many things, we need to be able to communicate easy and understandable. At CrossWorkers the company language is English. Everybody speaks a high-level of English and are easy to understand. You also have to make sure that the right tools for communication are in place. Meaning, sufficient internet, the right hardware (camera, microphone, laptop), the best online communication tools such as MS Teams, Zoom, etc. Off course there is a difference in working next to each other and 3000 km apart, but communication can be flawless by using the right tools.

Team spirit.
Working in different locations, will never be the same as in working in the same room. Invest in visiting you partner, not only for work, but also make social activities with them as you do with your home team. Invite your team or some of them to Europe for a week or two. It could be in the end of a sprint or as a start of a new assignment. It will often be a motivational factor that this is a possibility. For many of the countries that offer outsourcing, it is not common for them to have a chance to travel internationally. Having the teams to meet will accelerate corporation, make them feel as a part of your company and will therefore be a good investment.

Business understanding.
One of the thing we always emphasize to our clients, is to use some time to educate their developers in the business. When the developers understand that, their job is “not to write codes” but create business value, you will get a much better output of them and the technical part is much easier.
